Overall health and wellness (in my view) are based on the following where each should be optimized in concert with one another. Focusing on only one or two, will not sustain a healthy lifestyle:
Proper Nutrition and Hydration
Consistent Exercise and Movement
Managing Stress and Mental Health
Scheduling time for Quality Sleep
I have learned over the last two years, that these four pillars of health must be habitual.
If I had to focus on one, I would choose Proper Nutrition and Hydration, since it literally feeds the other Health Pillars.
Healthy eating enables,
(1) consistent and sustained energy while performing CrossFit and Strength Training,
(2) proper stress management, reduced agitation, and little to no depression events, and (3) quality sleep
When I started my weight loss journey, it was important to me that I focused on reducing my calories, staying away from alcohol and process foods, and staying away from refined sugars. I was losing weight in what I thought was a responsible fashion avoiding fad diets and losing about one pound per week. At first, I thought I could continue this journey on my own, but after meeting with Coach Kristin, I realized I was going about it mostly wrong. She gave me a quick lesson on macros and how important it was to ensure I have the proper mix of carbs, fats, and protein. As you age you can easily lose muscle. Lost muscle eventually over time means you can’t sustain an active lifestyle. As Coach Kristin analyzed my food intake prior to starting Nutrition coaching, my protein intake was less than half of what it needed to be. Coach Kristin developed my initial plan and over time, I was able to consistently meet her recommended mix of carbs, fats, and protein. What’s important is I have a weekly check-in of my nutrition progress. If a change needs to be made for various reasons, I get a quick update to tweak (small steps) what to change. We review if I feel hungry during workouts, how well I sleep, if I get hunger pains in the middle of the night, if I have enough hydration, etc. What’s important to recognize is that unless you have studied the proper resources to proper nutrition, it is nearly impossible to ensure you have consistent lifelong results without the aid of a competent coach. I am happy to say that Coach Kristin has helped me accel, and I am thankful for it.

Working on my nutrition with Coach Kristin has made a world of a difference in my overall health. When I started with her two years ago, my cholesterol and liver function levels were not within range, I was overweight, and just didn’t feel good about myself. My doctor had told me I needed to start making changes; so I joined Crossfit Ares and started work with Kristin on nutrition. Since then I have lost weight, feel more confident in my own body, and most recently just received the results of my blood work and am now within the normal range across the board. The best part about working with her is she is realistic. She doesn’t tell you to cut out any specific foods or drinks completely and understands that there will be times you don’t follow your plan to a T. She says that is ok and helps you get back on track! I recommend Coach Kristin and her nutritional program to anyone and everyone! It’s changed my life!

Working with Kristin for over 2.5 years has absolutely improved my life for the better. She helped me dial in my nutrition, lose weight and improve my quality of life. We worked on finding ways to incorporate my favorite foods into my life while not sacrificing overall nutritional quality that helps me not only feel better day to day but perform better at the gym. Working with her here at CFA helps identify when we need to move the dials on my macros to support my goals -- strong gym performance when I'm in either a maintenance or fat loss phase. She's super supportive and I can't recommend working with her enough.
